Above a certain threshold, the systems that support comprehension, retention and flexible problem-solving are functionally degraded — regardless of the child’s capacity when regulated. The work is therefore sequenced by state, not by curriculum.

A child who is worked up cannot take in new information — not because they are not trying, and not because they are not capable. Their body is busy. So we settle the body first, every time, and then we teach. That order is the whole method.

The GUL Method

Settle the body. Then teach.

What follows is the working architecture, in the order it is delivered. Nothing here is a mood or a philosophy statement: each layer has an entry condition, an observable exit criterion, and a rule for what happens when the criterion is not met.

The Readiness Gate

We don’t start the lesson until the body is actually ready.

“A child who is worked up can’t take in new information — not because they aren’t trying, and not because they aren’t capable. Their body is busy.”

And I know exactly what ready looks like. The Readiness Gate is an operationally defined, observable criterion — four things I watch for, written down specifically enough that two people watching the same child at the same moment would record the same answer.

I want to be precise about what it is and isn’t: I am reading posture and movement quality with my eyes, not measuring physiology. That is why it is written as an observable behavioral criterion and scored for reliability like every other measure here — a second observer scores it too, and we check whether we agree.

All four have to be present at once, and hold for thirty seconds. One missing closes the gate.

Domain 01

Postural extension

Trunk upright or open. Shoulders not lifted toward the ears. Arms not crossed, tucked, or held against the torso.

Closed off, curling inward, unwilling to open up — or rigidly locked.

Domain 02

Free distal movement

At least one spontaneous, unprompted movement of the hands or arms away from the midline.

Clenched fists, white knuckles, curled toes, hands held tight to the body.

Domain 03

Facial, jaw & ocular release

No visible jaw clench, no sustained brow furrow, no forced eye closure. Blink rate calm; gaze moves across the room easily.

Clenched teeth, tight lips, furrowed brow, squinting, rapid eye flutter.

Domain 04

Vocal availability

At least one spontaneous or responsive sound at conversational volume. For a non-speaking child, any spontaneous communicative act counts — sign, device, or gesture.

No available voice, breathy grunts, flat monotone, or pressured speech.

And a gate needs a floor

A gate with no floor can lock a child out of instruction indefinitely, and “we never got to the lesson” is a failure, not fidelity. So the rule is written down: if your child isn’t ready to learn on a given day, we don’t just do nothing. We drop to the lowest-pressure thing on the plan and I write down what got in the way — and if it happens three sessions running, that’s information about the plan, not about your child.

  • Drop the demand class, never the teaching. Move to the lowest-demand target on the plan.
  • Log it, with the suspected load: illness, sleep, a change at home, the environment, or the task being too hard.
  • Three in a row triggers a plan review — not more grounding.

Layer 01

Settle the body. Then teach.

Grounding and regulation are two different steps with two different jobs, and neither is ever skipped. Grounding is one high-intensity, whole-body activity that brings the body down out of high arousal. Regulation is what follows: rhythmic movement first, then work the muscles can feel.

The morning version runs outdoors and carries no screens, no print and nothing held close to the face for the first half hour — because near work is the most expensive thing you can ask of some children before anything has settled.

00 – 10

Waking without a demand in it

Natural light, morning air, and nothing asked. Water with minerals and citrus set within reach — placed, not offered, because being asked is the hard part for some children and the environment can do the asking instead.

10 – 25

Outside, with the eyes let alone

Fifteen unbroken minutes facing the morning sky — never the sun itself — with a soft, unfixed gaze. Quiet nature sound through open-ear headphones, so the room stays audible. Bare feet on real ground: grass, stone, packed earth.

25 – 40

The ascending sequence

The bottom-up chain below — feet, ankles, pelvis, ribcage, jaw. Rhythmic movement and work the muscles can feel, with nothing to focus the eyes on and no verbal correction.

40 – 45

A buffer, then the gate

Stillness outdoors, then toward food without a jump in stimulus. The Readiness Gate is read here, before anything cognitive is introduced.

Read from the bottom upFeet first, jaw last

Bracing travels upward. Gripping toes become a tilted pelvis, which becomes shallow breathing, which becomes a clenched jaw — so the unwinding runs the other way, from the ground up. That is where the practice got its name.

Level 1

Feet

Gripping and splaying on textured ground — grass, gravel, tree roots. Eyes unguided, head level, looking out at a distant tree line rather than down.

Level 2

Ankles

Slow heel drops off a low ledge; rocking heel to toe. Wide, unhurried scanning of the horizon rather than a fixed point.

Level 3

Pelvis and hips

Reciprocal weight shifts, hip hinges, low swinging and swaying. Eyes closed while swaying, or loosely following a moving branch.

Level 4

Ribcage and trunk

Rotational swings — the empty-coat-sleeves motion — with the ribs allowed to drift. The gaze turns with the body; nothing to fix on.

Level 5

Neck and jaw

Jaw drops, tongue resting at the palate, soft yawning and slow neck rolls. Full soft-focus, panoramic gaze. This is the last thing to let go, and the first thing to tell you it hasn’t.

Where the evidence is thin, I say so

In my practice this ordering produces the most reliable readiness signal, and I hold it as a protocol standard so it is consistent and teachable. It is a clinical convention, not a demonstrated necessity. There is no evidence base establishing a mandated order, and I am not going to tell you there is. I track how long readiness takes under each order, so that this becomes an answered question rather than a house rule.

Before anything physical

Some of what I do is high-intensity by design. So before we do anything physical, I need to know about any joint, heart, seizure, or activity restrictions, and I’ll want that in writing. I’d rather ask an awkward question than find out later.

How any of it is asked for

Some children read demands as threats. Not because they’re defiant, and often not even because they dislike the activity — a child can love something and still have a body that won’t accept being told to do it. So I don’t hand them a demand to brace against. The adult does the thing, out loud, and the room supplies the invitation.

Layer 02

Take the load off the room.

“Reducing choices isn’t restriction. It’s protecting the bandwidth for what you actually want them spending it on.”

A room that reads to most people as simple can arrive at a hyper-perceptive child as dozens of things at once — a pile of laundry, seven shirt options, pens across a desk, a light that hums. By the time they sit down to learn, a good part of what they had has already been spent, and not on the work.

So this layer is an audit of the room, not of the child. Every item below is a real, removable cost. None of them is an explanation. I don’t claim any single thing here causes or underlies your child’s profile — I claim it is a load worth taking off before I put a demand on them.

Sound

Plenty of children hear things in a house that the adults in it genuinely do not — the whine off a cheap charger, a dimmer, a fridge. It is worth ruling out before anyone concludes a child is being difficult about a room.

  • Walk the wall plugs and power bricks. Generic switch-mode adapters are the usual culprits.
  • Swap dimmer switches for plain ones. Put motor-driven appliances behind a door or on a pad.
  • Set a monitor’s brightness in hardware rather than dimming it in software.
  • Soften the room: a dense rug with underlay, heavy curtains on glass, irregular shelving on a bare facing wall.
  • If you mask, mask low — pink or brown noise, quietly. Hissy white noise tends to make things worse, not better.

Decisions

The same audit, applied to choices. Fewer decisions before lunch means more left for the afternoon.

  • The closet becomes a uniform. Five to seven modular outfits, seamless and tag-free, hung as complete sets. Everything else goes into labelled storage in another room. Open bins, not drawers, so putting clothes away stops being a task.
  • The desk holds two things. A task light and a writing surface. Everything else lives in a caddy off the desk, cables in a channel, and two minutes at the end of the day so the morning never opens on yesterday.
  • Food they can reach without asking. One eye-level bin of single-ingredient food, colour-coded so a plate is built by taking one of each. Nothing that needs a knife or a recipe at the hour they’re most depleted.

Layer 03

The same outcomes, by a route the body accepts.

“Children learn a skill better when they’ve done it several times before anyone names it. Experience first, label second.”

Your curriculum outcomes don’t change. What changes is how the work is delivered: how far from the face it sits, what it is dressed as, and what has already happened in the ten minutes before it arrives.

If your child shows the pattern that goes with a near-vision problem — avoiding reading, eye strain or headaches with close work, losing their place, covering an eye — I’ll say so and suggest an eye exam. That’s a real physical cost worth removing before I put a demand on them. It is not an explanation for the whole picture, and I won’t tell you it will fix attention or reading.

Routing the standard through what they already love

The skill underneath a standard doesn’t care what it is wearing. Ratios are ratios whether they arrive as a worksheet or as the reason a sorting system keeps backing up.

Momentum before the hard thing

I stack easy, low-stakes repetitions before the hard thing. It builds momentum, so the hard thing arrives into a body that’s already succeeding — and it arrives at arm’s length or further, not sixteen inches from the face.

  • Text moves off the desk and onto a wall, a vertical board, or the floor — or off the visual channel entirely.
  • Handwriting stops being the bottleneck: talking it through, sorting tiles, dictating while pacing.
  • Instructions become observations. “Solve number four” becomes “this trajectory misses the baseline every single time and I can’t see why.”
  • Movement is built into the structure rather than granted as a break, so a reset never reads as a correction.

Let them be the one auditing

Being tested is exposure. Being the person who finds the error is not — and it uses exactly the same intelligence.

  • Find the flaw. An official-looking solved problem with a real error in it. The job is to catch it and prove the page wrong.
  • Work backwards. The answer is given up front; the job is to reconstruct the rules that produced it.
  • Be the consultant. I play the well-meaning novice who is stuck. They direct strategy without ever being the one holding the pencil.

On speed — the honest version

Targets in this class often move faster than families expect, and I could make that the headline. I’d rather tell you exactly what I mean and exactly what I don’t.

What it applies to: discrete, single-criterion targets a child already has the motor, sensory and language capacity to perform — asking for help instead of quitting, using a named break tool, tolerating a specific transition, working through a task past the point of frustration. What it doesn’t: expressive language, toileting, learning to read, or anything where the rate limit is development rather than access. Naming the exclusions is what makes the rest worth anything.

What “mastered” means here: correct, independent performance on at least eight of ten planned opportunities, across three consecutive sessions, with no prompt above a gesture — where an opportunity is counted and recorded at the time. What “generalised” means: the same criterion met in a different place, with a different adult, unprompted. Probed, not assumed. What “lasting” means: still met at two, four and eight weeks.

And the status of all of it: this is currently a clinical observation with a stated measurement plan — not a demonstrated finding. It becomes a finding on the day the maintenance data exists. Until then I’ll describe it as an observation, without exception, and you should hold it that way too.

And I get it wrong first, on purpose

Frustration tolerance isn’t something you can explain to someone. It’s built by being frustrated and coming out the other side. So I put things just past comfortable, on purpose, with me right there — and I make the mistake myself first, out loud, and let them watch me handle it. Children learn far more from watching someone struggle and recover than from watching someone be perfect. Perfect just tells them they’re not. And I don’t rescue them out of it; I coach them through it. Getting rescued teaches a child that frustration is an emergency. Getting coached teaches them it’s a Tuesday.

Layer 04

Transitions & the executive co-pilot.

“A child can love something and still have a body that won’t accept being told to do it.”

Pulling a monotropic brain out of deep flow registers as a neurological emergency — a rapid dopamine drop and a sudden sensory re-flood at the same moment. “Five minutes left” does not soften that; it starts a countdown the body reads as a threat.

So transitions are built as an ascending slope, and the adult holds the parts of executive function that collapse first.

Stage 1

Parallel bridging

Enter their world with zero demand to leave it. Sit at ninety degrees, never hovering behind, and watch in silence for sixty to ninety seconds. Then validate the internal world without hinting at an exit: “that circuit logic is wild — I did not realise the comparators could pulse that quickly.”

Stage 2

Biological & proprioceptive drift

Wake interoception while central focus is still on the task. A sensory anchor placed within arm’s reach without comment — warm tea, cold water, something crunchy. A distant window opened for air and peripheral light. The adult models a somatic reset nearby: arms over a doorframe, an audible sigh, a dropped jaw.

Stage 3

The save-state bookmark

Most transition resistance is fear of losing task state. Three physical artefacts remove it: a photo that freezes the current layout, a sticky flag marking the exact line, and three dictated words for what comes next. Offered declaratively — “I put the sticky note and the camera right next to the keyboard.”

The four roles of the co-pilot

  • Stagehand. Executive dysfunction peaks between intending to start and physically starting. Every micro-barrier is removed before the learner looks at the workspace — file open, tools out, canvas set, hardware charged. Never announced.
  • External RAM. Monotropic focus bottlenecks working memory. The adult silently writes the two or three anchor words the learner says aloud, and sets the card where it can be seen.
  • Somatic canary. The learner rarely notices their own eye strain or jaw clench. The adult does not name it — they stand, stretch against the doorframe, drop their jaw, and let mirror neurons do the correcting.
  • Save-state anchor. At the end, the adult archives: photograph the build, capture the layout, and ask one low-demand question — “what are the first two words you’ll want to see tomorrow?”

Long projects — the quest tree

Multi-week projects fail when the perceived task mass becomes the obstacle. So the project is not a timeline; it is an un-timed, non-linear node tree.

  • The learner chooses which node to activate. Low analytical energy pivots to fabrication or aesthetics without failing the project.
  • One node card is visible at a time. Everything else waits in the vault, out of the visual field.
  • Every completed node yields a self-contained working product — so an early stop is a finished version, never an abandonment.
  • At the mid-project dip, branches are pruned collaboratively with zero penalty: “this machine already works without the outer shell. Let’s call it version one.”
  • At least forty per cent of the evidence is collected off-screen — voice notes, physical models, time-lapse photographs.

Layer 05

Measurement, maintenance and the hand-off.

“Claim less, measure more.”

The architecture is designed to end. Active daily work stops when a skill meets criterion; what follows is a short, honest test of whether it actually held once nobody was propping it up. The standard used is single-case experimental design, at What Works Clearinghouse level — without requiring anyone to publish anything.

The 8-week maintenance probe

One standardised five-minute session, identical to baseline conditions — no prompting, no coaching, no corrective feedback — run at week two, week four and week eight after mastery.

  • Materials out, unrelated items cleared, timer set to exactly five minutes, camera on a stand at 45° with hands and face in frame.
  • The script is one line: “we are going to do our quick five-minute check-in. Do your best work.” Neutral effort praise only, never correctness praise.
  • Pause over five seconds or “I don’t know” — “try the next one,” scored incorrect. At five minutes: “all done.”
  • Video probes are scored asynchronously by GUL to establish inter-observer agreement at or above eighty per cent; at least one probe per interval is recorded.
  • Directly parent-scored probes are tagged as such in the record, so the data stays transparent about its own provenance.

Formal discharge — all four, or none

  1. Mastery stability. Performance holds at or above criterion across the week two, four and eight probes with no re-introduction of intervention.
  2. Untrained generalization. The skill appears in at least two novel, untrained materials or contexts with zero coaching prompts.
  3. Procedural independence. The parent prepares, runs and records the probe on schedule without a reminder.
  4. Data verification. Asynchronous scoring agrees with the parent’s tally at or above eighty-five per cent.

If a probe misses criterion

A confirmatory probe runs within forty-eight hours to rule out fatigue or a fidelity slip. If the drop is real, a five-day precision booster targets the actual failure type — accuracy decay, fluency latency, or context dependency — and the maintenance clock resets. It is documented as a re-intervention phase, and the original data is never overwritten.

Two limitations, before anyone states them for me

Every result I have is confounded with me. All of it comes from one practitioner’s caseload, so nothing in it can separate the method from the person delivering it. That is a real limitation and it has a real resolution: the first practitioner I train produces the data that answers it.

The comparison is your child’s own baseline, not another programme. This design shows that change tracks the point where something was introduced, repeatedly, in defined measures with reported reliability. It does not establish that this outperforms any alternative, and I will never tell you that it does.

On agreement: day-to-day scoring holds to at least eighty per cent between two observers. Graduating a family is held to a stricter standard — at or above eighty-five per cent on the maintenance probes, and the same on the independent check of your scoring against mine.

The Boundaries

What I won’t claim.

I tell you what I don’t know. Where the evidence is thin, I say so — including about the profiles I work with most. This section exists because that sentence is worth nothing unless it gets specific.

On what caused it

I don’t work on that question, and honestly I don’t think anyone can answer it reliably for an individual child. What I can do is work with where your child is right now. That is the answer even if you ask me directly — and I’d rather you knew that in advance than felt deflected in the moment.

On curing anything

There is no healing, fixing, reversing or outgrowing in this work, and you won’t find those words anywhere on this site. Your child is not a problem to be solved. We build skills, and we open doors.

On vision

I screen for symptoms, not visual function, and I refer for an eye exam — not for a named treatment. I won’t tell you vision therapy will improve attention or reading. That was tested in a randomised trial and it didn’t.

On demand-avoidant profiles

It is a clinically described profile, not a diagnosis in DSM-5-TR or ICD-11, and the intervention literature for it is thin — case series and parent report, no randomised trials. I work with the profile because it predicts what happens in the room, and I measure whether what I do works.

On diagnosing

I don’t, and I won’t confirm one either — including when a parent offers it and is probably right. What I’ll tell you is what I observe. The rest is a question for your pediatrician or your evaluating clinician.

On other people’s work

I won’t name another provider, programme or approach as harmful or ineffective — not on this site, not on a call, not about the one that didn’t work for you. I’ll describe what I do, and let you draw the contrast.

Six phases, in this order, for a reason.

Each phase has an entry condition. Nothing above the line starts until everything below it holds — the same bottom-up logic the physical sequence uses.

Phase 01

Baseline, audit & the operating day

Direct observation across real settings, not a clinic. Photometric and acoustic audit of the rooms the child actually uses. Definition of the target behaviours in observable terms, with baseline data taken before a single thing is changed. This is what makes everything after it measurable.

Phase 02

Circadian & biomechanical grounding

The 45-minute morning architecture and the ascending kinetic sequence — feet, ankles, pelvis, ribcage, jaw. The first thirty minutes of the day carry zero visual load. The Readiness Gate is installed as the household’s standing entry condition. Full protocol →

Cross-Provider Integration

The failure is rarely the therapy. It is the carryover.

A child can attend three excellent appointments a week and still stall. The clinical design is usually sound; what breaks is the distance between a forty-five minute session and the rest of the child’s life. Home exercise programmes stack up, families run out of capacity, and nothing generalises.

I sit in the room, learn the exact cue, and carry it into the day — and I make sure your child arrives at those appointments regulated enough to use them.

Scope of Services

I provide one-to-one skill instruction and parent coaching for children with complex profiles, delivered in the settings where those skills need to work — the home, the homeschool room, and the community. I build individualized learning plans with defined, measurable targets, track progress against those definitions, and coach parents to carry the skills into daily life. I also coordinate with your child’s other providers and attend their sessions when that helps the work carry over.

What I don’t do: I don’t diagnose. I don’t provide occupational, speech, physical, vision, or mental-health therapy, and I don’t replace any of them. I don’t prescribe or advise on medical care. I don’t provide crisis or emergency services. If something falls outside what I do, I’ll tell you and help you find the person who does it.

Praise Architecture

Why “you’re so smart” is banned in this house.

Ability praise sets an unstable standard. The child learns that safety and competence depend on flawless output — and then avoids the task in order to protect the identity. For a brilliant child who is already running self-diminishing scripts, it is the fastest route to a shutdown.

It is replaced by process praise and grounded identity framing: validation anchored in mechanics the child actually controls.

The guardrail

If you see autonomic escalation — flushing, rigidity, sudden silliness, verbal aggression — all linguistic praise drops instantly to zero. Revert to declarative presence, dropped eye contact and reduced physical proximity until the baseline returns. Praise is not a comfort measure. It is an input, and it can be the wrong one.

  • It reduces predictive load. A brain that knows the sequence stops spending energy scanning for surprises.
  • It preserves working memory. Novelty in structure and content at once forces two variables; a fixed container frees all available capacity for the material.
  • It decouples success from content. If maths is brutal on Tuesday, the shape of the routine is still safe.

Graduation is a defined moment

You are finished with me when four things are true: performance holds through the week-eight probe, the skill appears in two untrained contexts, you run the maintenance probe on schedule without a reminder from me, and independent scoring agrees with your tally. Not when the invoice ends — when the data says the household is holding it.

You also get the failure path in writing: exactly what to do if a probe misses criterion, and why a five-day booster is a normal part of the curve rather than a sign anything has gone wrong.

Why I’m asking you to do this at home

“I’ll be honest with you about something most providers won’t say: what happens in my session is the smaller half.

A skill that only works with me, in this room, isn’t a skill yet. It’s a skill with me attached to it. It becomes real when it works with you, at your kitchen table, on a Saturday, when I’m nowhere near.

That doesn’t happen by itself. It has to be built — same tools, same words, different person, different place. So you get one thing a week. One. Specific, observable, and I write out the exact wording so you never have to improvise. You don’t have to understand the framework to use it, and you’re not being asked to be a therapist. The Designation

Neurodevelopmental Architect

The title is not a job description — it is a designation Ground Up Learning owns and grants. It is earned by completing the full GUL training sequence through this practice, and it is held only by practitioners this practice has trained and stands behind.

For an organisation, that is the difference between adopting a framework and holding a credential. Programmes that complete the sequence can name qualified staff as Neurodevelopmental Architects under licence, with the standards, measurement discipline and scope boundaries that come with it.

The Architect

Ashlyn Osborne is the Neurodevelopmental Architect behind Ground Up Learning. Working at the intersection of behavioral sciences, applied research and structural design, she does not manage surface-level behavior. She engineers ecosystems.

Her practice rests on one observation, tested repeatedly against real children in real houses: most programmes are structurally sound for regulated children and structurally silent for dysregulated ones. Rather than adapting someone else’s curriculum, she develops original intellectual property in the field — bespoke architectures that remove invisible physical, visual and environmental friction before a single demand is placed.

The two questions this market actually asks

“Show me your outcome data for children like mine.”

Honestly? Not yet — not in the form you’re asking for, and I’d rather tell you that than show you testimonials and let you assume they’re data.

Here’s what I do have. For every child, I define exactly what I’m measuring before I measure it — written down, specific enough that two people watching would record the same number. I write down in advance what expected progress looks like, so I can’t move the goalposts later. A second person independently scores a portion of sessions and we check whether we agree. And I check at two, four and eight weeks whether it held.

What that means for you: within the first month you’ll have your child’s own numbers, with the definitions attached, and you’ll be able to see for yourself whether it’s working. What it means for me is that in a year I’ll have something I can actually show you, instead of an impression. You’d be joining while I’m building that, and I’d rather you knew.

“You’re not a licensed clinician. Why premium rates?”

That’s a fair question and here’s the straight answer. What you’re paying for is one person who works where your child actually lives, who sits in on the other providers so the pieces connect, who trains you rather than keeping the skill in the room with me, and who measures what she claims.

A label exists to give a child access — to resources, to services, to understanding. It is not a ceiling on who they can become. When a child is heavily labelled, the people around them start reading everything they do through it, and genuine attempts get read as symptoms. Part of this work is helping a family hold the label loosely.
